Selanik

It was a beautiful sunny morning in the city of Selanik. Walking in the streets you could see the Armenian traders trying to sell their stuff; the Jewish jewellery-shop owners were just opening and in the Greek cafene were people were drinking their morning Turkish coffee before going to their job. The grocery stores and the meat and fish shops in the central market Kapani were already full of women of all ages and races. From the way of dressing you could tell. Turkish women with covered faces and bodies, Jewish girls with a cover of the top of their head, more open Greek women with light dresses and open hair. Levent had his coffee in the Greek cafene after the morning prayer. He always liked the atmosphere of Kapani and now that he came back from his Military School in Istanbul he tried to visit Kapani every morning. Now he had to go to the City Military Command to take over his post as young Ottoman Officer. Although as every young Turkish officer war battle was in his blood, Levent thought that “the situation in the Empire was good with very few troubles for several years, it was a good time to be a soldier”. Levent was undoubtedly a very good soldier as he finished 3rd in the Military School but he also liked to live his life and Selanik was definitely a city to give him all the pleasures of life. The Ottomans used to be strict in religious matters till the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent when he introduced many laws and codes to relax life from the tight rule of the sharia. Now, many years later the Turkish men were enjoying life with non-Muslim girls, before, of course, marrying a good Muslim girl.
Levent presented himself in the military post next to the main Tower in the sea. He became responsible of an elite Albanian unit of 25 soldiers. It wouldn’t be hard as he knew well the Arnauts. In the Military Academy in Istanbul one of his best friends was an Arnaut and after that Levent himself could speak the Albanian language, though in a simple way. After taking the appropriate paperwork he met the Sergeant of the unit. The days passed in Selanik with the Unit of Levent guarding loyally their posts. On special days Levent was taking the Unit to march on different neighbourhoods. Girls all around the city were coming out to watch the handsome guys in the glorious Ottoman uniforms, but what was happening in the Greek neighbourhood it was hard to describe. Young and older Greek women were coming out in the streets and they were making all shorts of comments for them sometimes even showing them parts of their bodies to provoke them. One day they passed in front of one of the biggest houses in the Greek mahala. The woman of the house, Katerina, a pretty Greek woman of 38 years old invited Levent in the house. He denied telling to her that he is an Ottoman Officer and that he has a Unit to rule. The day was very hot in the Mediterranean summer. The Greek woman responded that the house was big enough for the whole Unit and that it was bad not allow his brave soldiers to have a drink in that heat. Levent thought that it could not be really any harm. When they entered the front door in the house garden the Albanians were positively surprised. Katerina had three pretty daughters, 22, 20 and 19 years old, two great looking sisters at 32 and 36 years old, both married, and six young Greek girls working in the house. All girls were lightly dressed as usually were the Greek girls of the city. They brought them water and juices and other drinks and the Albanians felt like being in Paradise. One thing that these young Albanian soldiers were not famous of, was their manners. Soon they started using their big hands on the Greek bodies.
